UPDATE 10/01/2021 at 5:02 PM - The incident has been transitioned to Union Pacific Railroad. Please direct all inquires to them.

UPDATE 10/01/2021 at 4:45 PM - Riverside County Fire Department's Hazardous Materials Team successfully made entry into the container. Once inside they were to able to confirm that the fire was contained to the flooring of the container. All contents were intact. The hazard has been mitigated. Crews are currently in the process of cleaning up and will clear the scene shortly.

UPDATE 10/01/2021 at 4:15 PM - Riverside County Fire Department's Hazardous Materials Team is on scene and making entry into the container. Both directions of I-10 is completely closed between Cook Street and Monterey Avenue.

UPDATE 10/01/2021 at 3:00 PM - The container is carrying hazardous materials that consist of 25 pounds of lithium batteries, consumer drills, cell phones, 28 standard car batteries and 11 airbag deploy gas cylinders. Two victims were transported by ground ambulance to area hospitals with critical burn injuries. A Public Information Officer is on scene. Firefighters are on scene of an exterior fire on a container of a train near Dinah Shore Drive and Pacific Avenue in Palm Desert. Eastbound I-10 is closed between Cook Street and Monterey Avenue. Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) has stopped all railroad traffic in the area.
